Karen Dispo-De Boos is a long-time North Country resident who lived in Australia for ten years but returned to the North Country when her husband retired from the Royal Australian Navy in 2013. Karen has an extensive background in the nonprofit sector but has also worked many years in marketing, advertising, and public relations. She has been the Program Director for the Asian American Journalists Association and recently served on the advisory board of the antipoverty nonprofit Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties. Karen is currently the Board Secretary for the Adirondack Regional Theatre. Before Karen joined Literacy Volunteers, she was the Deputy Director at the Strand Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, NY. Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art History from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master in Nonprofit Management from Regis University. She lives in Plattsburgh with her husband, three sons, and their two dogs.

Ms. Hensley-Cushing describes herself as a life-long learner. She has over 20 years adult education experience as a trainer, literacy specialist, adult education executive director, curriculum director, consultant, training coordinator, and state professional development director. Past positions include Executive Director of Literacy NENY, Associate Director of Literacy NY- Greater Capital Region, Literacy NY Program Director and ACCES/NYSED Regional Adult Education Director- Capital Region/North Country. She has developed, implemented and monitored professional development and technical assistance for adult education programs in 18 counties of New York State. She has a deep understanding of local programs and state administration—evidenced by successful operation of a 20,000 square mile adult education network, comprised of rural, suburban, and urban programs, both traditional and community-based. As a trainer and director, her expertise in research-based theory and practice is grounded by what will work in the field and what will serve practitioners and students well. She is committed to the concept of “Plain English”: language that is clear, concise and avoids jargon. Currently retired, she is teaching an ESOL class, mentoring a student teacher and working with an ABE student at her local library.

Michelle Stockwell has been with the WSWHE BOCES since 2018, previously working for SUNY Adirondack and the Washington County Career Center focused around continuing education and workforce development. Michelle has a bachelor's in psychology (minor in Social Work) from River University and a master's degree in School Counseling from The College of St. Joseph's. Michelle oversees the adult programs including High School Equivalency, Employment Training for Adults and Practical Nursing at WSWHE BOCES. These programs provide training to adult learners looking to retrain, retool or start a career. In her role, she also works with industries to provide training and continues to build connections with the workforce development system.

Coleen Macaluso has been with Ulster BOCES since 2001. She started her career in the Model Schools division and then became the Adult Literacy Coordinator in 2005. In 2022 she was appointed Assistant Director For Adult Education. The adult and continuing education program serves over 2000 students per year in Adult Literacy, Continuing Education and Adult CTE programs.

Executive Director, Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County

Angela Dutcher has been with Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County as the Executive Director since 2016. She previously worked at Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County as the Executive Director between 2000 and 2005 and helped the organization receive its Accreditation from Literacy Volunteers of America at that time. She has a BS in Organizational Leadership and Communication from Marist College and is a Certified Personal Trainer focusing on functional fitness. Angela is excited to be a part of the NYACCE Board and wants to bring awareness to the unique challenges that small literacy programs face in the communities that they serve.

Director of Operations, Literacy Buffalo Niagara

Amy Mazur is the Director of Operations for Literacy Buffalo Niagara providing adult literacy services in Western New York State.   Amy completed her education with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Buffalo State College in Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Amy has worked for Literacy Buffalo Niagara for over 14 years and oversees all program operations for the agency.  Their largest program is their adult literacy tutoring program which trains and supports 150 volunteer tutors.  In a typical year, they serves over 200 adult English and Basic Literacy students through he work of their volunteers.  Amy is also a member of the Literacy NY Trainer Corp, a state-wide organization that creates and distributes training for staff and tutors of similar programs all across NYS and a certified Learning to Achieve trainer.

Case Manager, Buffalo Public Schools

Chantal Michaux was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She attended the University at Buffalo, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and community mental health, and Canisius College, where she earned a master's degree in counselor education. She has an extensive background in program and professional development strategies as well as implementation. For many years, she worked with some of the most vulnerable populations in Western New York as a counselor/case manager in a variety of diverse settings, including but not limited to healthcare/public health, community agencies, K-12, and post-secondary education. Currently, Chantal is completing the required coursework towards licensure as a licensed mental health counselor. She joined Buffalo Public Schools-Adult Education in 2001 as a case manager for literacy and vocational programs and remains the case manager/career advisor department chair and community liaison for Buffalo Public School-Adult Education as well as a certified trainer for the WEST RAEN AEEP.

Amanda Vellake serves as Director of the Adult and Continuing Education Division of the Buffalo Public School District, one of the premier education and workforce skills training providers in the Western New York region. The Division offers TASC test preparation, English as a Second Language and Computer courses, and vocational training at 35 sites around the city. Amanda is a Past-Secretary of NYACCE.

Director of Programs, International Center-ESOL, Catholic Charities Community Services

Elaine Roberts is the Director of Programs for the International Center, the ESOL department of Catholic Charities Community Services (CCCS). As part of CCCS’ Division of Immigrant and Refugee Services, the International Center provides ESOL and Citizenship Preparation programming in Manhattan and the Bronx and in Westchester, Orange, and Dutchess Counties. The Center’s goal is to provide the language skills and confidence necessary for all English language learners to communicate effectively in their personal, professional, and academic lives in New York. Prior to joining Catholic Charities, Elaine worked with adult learners throughout NYC at several community-based organizations. She has been a steering committee of the New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy (NYCCAL) since 2011.

Divisional Administrator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education, Eastern Suffolk BOCES 

Barbara Egloff has dedicated over 25 years to providing educational services to Eastern Suffolk BOCES secondary and adult students. She is currently the Divisional Administrator for the Career, Technical and Adult Education Department and oversees adult programming at six campuses and numerous satellite locations. Barbara has served on various boards, committees and task forces at the local, regional and state level. Currently she serves on Suffolk County’s Welfare to Work Commission, Workforce Development Board, Reentry Task Force, Regional Justice Task Force, Carol Pufahl Literacy Foundation and she participates on many advisory boards for Eastern Suffolk BOCES business, industry and community partners. Barbara enjoys working with students and her administrative team. She is often found working with colleagues and partners on community service projects. Barbara strives to create a learning community where teachers and staff work collaboratively to “transform lives” for all students.
