President
Adult Services Administrator, Champlain Valley Education Services (CVES) BOCES
Maria Huntington is the Adult Services Administrator for Champlain Valley Education Services (CVES) BOCES in Plattsburgh, NY and started this role in October 2022. For years, Maria has been an advocate for adult education. She started her journey in adult education in 2011 as a Literacy Volunteer Director and then worked for Capital Region BOCES as the Literacy Zone Coordinator in the South End of Albany in 2015. In 2017, Maria became the Supervisor of Adult Education and continued supporting adult learners in HSE, ESL, and adult training programs like Electrical, HVAC/R, and Welding. Maria continues to collaborate with multiple community partners to provide the best education possible for adult learners.
Maria earned her BA from Niagara University in Elementary and Special Education. After graduating she volunteered in Egypt and Sudan with VOICA, a Catholic organization associated with the Canossian Daughters of Charity. Upon returning home, she enrolled in the School of International Training (SIT) in Brattleboro, VT and received her MA in Intercultural Service, Leadership, and Management. She is very passionate about serving others and helping them reach their full potential.

Lisa Lee joined Literacy Volunteers of Allegany County, Inc. in 2003 as the Executive Director. At that time the organization provided adult volunteer tutoring services and peer tutoring programs within the Allegany County school communities. Since that time, the organization has been transformed offering one to one and classroom based education, workforce development, career planning and support services for adults, and quality school based STEAM and afterschool education programs. Now called Literacy West NY, Inc., services have expanded to Wyoming, Cattaraugus and Livingston Counties. Lisa has served on the NYACCE Board since 2006.
NELL ECKERSLEY

Director, Literacy Assistance Center
Nell Eckersley is the Director of Digital Equity Projects & Senior Advisor for the New York City Support and Technical Assistance Center (STAC) at the Literacy Assistance Center. Nell has been working on ways to integrate digital literacy skills into adult education ever since she developed a project on how to teach basic computer skills in a classroom without computers in 2001. Nell’s current work on digital literacy and adult education includes being a member of the US Adult Digital Learning Advisory Group for the Ed Tech Center at World Ed, a Subject Matter Expert for the DRAW project, a technology advisor for the CILIA-T project, and a resource developer for the LINCS. Her particular areas of interest are strengthening digital literacy skills for adult education practitioners and students, integrating technology into the adult education classroom via mobile devices, and digital inclusion for all.

Deputy Executive Director, Literacy West
Sarah Mills is the Deputy Executive Director of Literacy West, NY Inc. located in the Southern Tier. Sarah is a graduate of Mercyhurst University, where she received a BA in Art Therapy. Sarah worked for Planned Parenthood in Corning, NY for ten years. After returning to Allegany County, Sarah was given the opportunity to be the Youth Manger at Literacy West, NY Inc. After eight years with the agency, Sarah now oversees four youth programs and six adult programs within six counties of Western NY. Sarah has been a NYACCE Board member since 2019.

Alyson Trudeau has been with the Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES since 1982. She started her career in Career and Technical Education in 1989 and then became the Coordinator of Adult and Continuing Education in 2004. The adult education program serves over 2500 students per year in Adult Literacy, Continuing Education and Adult CTE programs. Alyson is also a member of the Putnam/Westchester Workforce Board and the Red Carpet of Putnam County.

Katie LaBonte is the Adult Literacy Coordinator for Champlain Valley Educational Services. Katie helps run the Clinton and Essex County Literacy Zones, as well as oversees funding streams through OTDA. She began her career in adult education as an Adult Literacy Teacher in January 2018, working as a distance education teacher, classroom teacher, and working in Clinton and Essex County Jails. Katie graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in childhood education (Concentration in English) and a master’s degree in special education.

For several years, Tarin Bready assisted adult students in achieving their educational and career goals. While she has moved to a different facet of education, she recognizes the importance of community access to adult education and high school equivalency programs. To combine multiple famous quotes and produce an overall paraphrase, Tarin believes in endeavoring to leave every space she enters better than how she found it. Therefore, Tarin is appreciative to work with incredible NYACCE members and continue to learn from a specialized group of intelligent, energized people who add value to their respective programs and their communities.
JESSE ROYLANCE

Director, Schenectady City Schools
As the Director of Adult and Continuing Education for Schenectady City School District, Jesse Roylance oversees programs enrolling over 2,500 students in HSE, ESL, Career training, incarcerated education, alternative K-12 education, and a rich continuing education program in an inner city environment struggling with poverty and creating successful pathways for its residents. In addition, his office oversees one of the largest High School Equivalency testing facilities in New York State and has created several new training programs working with colleges, employers, community agencies, city agencies, as well as community advocacy groups. Jesse has served on the NYS "TASC" taskforce on the implementation of the new HSE assessment, the Schenectady County College and Career Counseling Center's advisory board, the municipal housing Family Self-Sufficiency board, and is an active member of the New York State Association of Incarcerated Educational Professionals (NYSAIEP), New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals (NYATEP), and ASCD. Jesse has received citations and awards from the Schenectady City Council and the Human Rights Commission for his service to the community. Jesse is a Past-President of NYACCE.

Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers of Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties
Karen Dispo-De Boos is a long-time North Country resident who lived in Australia for ten years but returned to the North Country when her husband retired from the Royal Australian Navy in 2013. Karen has an extensive background in the nonprofit sector but has also worked many years in marketing, advertising, and public relations. She has been the Program Director for the Asian American Journalists Association and recently served on the advisory board of the antipoverty nonprofit Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties. Karen is currently the Board Secretary for the Adirondack Regional Theatre. Before Karen joined Literacy Volunteers, she was the Deputy Director at the Strand Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, NY. Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art History from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master in Nonprofit Management from Regis University. She lives in Plattsburgh with her husband, three sons, and their two dogs.
SUE HENSLEY-CUSHING

Ms. Hensley-Cushing describes herself as a life-long learner. She has over 20 years adult education experience as a trainer, literacy specialist, adult education executive director, curriculum director, consultant, training coordinator, and state professional development director. Past positions include Executive Director of Literacy NENY, Associate Director of Literacy NY- Greater Capital Region, Literacy NY Program Director and ACCES/NYSED Regional Adult Education Director- Capital Region/North Country. She has developed, implemented and monitored professional development and technical assistance for adult education programs in 18 counties of New York State. She has a deep understanding of local programs and state administration—evidenced by successful operation of a 20,000 square mile adult education network, comprised of rural, suburban, and urban programs, both traditional and community-based. As a trainer and director, her expertise in research-based theory and practice is grounded by what will work in the field and what will serve practitioners and students well. She is committed to the concept of “Plain English”: language that is clear, concise and avoids jargon. Currently retired, she is teaching an ESOL class, mentoring a student teacher and working with an ABE student at her local library.
MICHELLE STOCKWELL

Administrator for Adult Programs, Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES
Michelle Stockwell has been with the WSWHE BOCES since 2018, previously working for SUNY Adirondack and the Washington County Career Center focused around continuing education and workforce development. Michelle has a bachelor's in psychology (minor in Social Work) from River University and a master's degree in School Counseling from The College of St. Joseph's. Michelle oversees the adult programs including High School Equivalency, Employment Training for Adults and Practical Nursing at WSWHE BOCES. These programs provide training to adult learners looking to retrain, retool or start a career. In her role, she also works with industries to provide training and continues to build connections with the workforce development system.

Coleen Macaluso has been with Ulster BOCES since 2001. She started her career in the Model Schools division and then became the Adult Literacy Coordinator in 2005. In 2022 she was appointed Assistant Director For Adult Education. The adult and continuing education program serves over 2000 students per year in Adult Literacy, Continuing Education and Adult CTE programs.
ANGELA DUTCHER

Executive Director, Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County
Angela Dutcher has been with Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County as the Executive Director since 2016. She previously worked at Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County as the Executive Director between 2000 and 2005 and helped the organization receive its Accreditation from Literacy Volunteers of America at that time. She has a BS in Organizational Leadership and Communication from Marist College and is a Certified Personal Trainer focusing on functional fitness. Angela is excited to be a part of the NYACCE Board and wants to bring awareness to the unique challenges that small literacy programs face in the communities that they serve.
AMY MAZUR

Director of Operations, Literacy Buffalo Niagara
Amy Mazur is the Director of Operations for Literacy Buffalo Niagara providing adult literacy services in Western New York State. Amy completed her education with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Buffalo State College in Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Amy has worked for Literacy Buffalo Niagara for over 14 years and oversees all program operations for the agency. Their largest program is their adult literacy tutoring program which trains and supports 150 volunteer tutors. In a typical year, they serves over 200 adult English and Basic Literacy students through he work of their volunteers. Amy is also a member of the Literacy NY Trainer Corp, a state-wide organization that creates and distributes training for staff and tutors of similar programs all across NYS and a certified Learning to Achieve trainer.
CHANTAL MICHAUX

Case Manager, Buffalo Public Schools
Chantal Michaux was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She attended the University at Buffalo, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and community mental health, and Canisius College, where she earned a master's degree in counselor education. She has an extensive background in program and professional development strategies as well as implementation. For many years, she worked with some of the most vulnerable populations in Western New York as a counselor/case manager in a variety of diverse settings, including but not limited to healthcare/public health, community agencies, K-12, and post-secondary education. Currently, Chantal is completing the required coursework towards licensure as a licensed mental health counselor. She joined Buffalo Public Schools-Adult Education in 2001 as a case manager for literacy and vocational programs and remains the case manager/career advisor department chair and community liaison for Buffalo Public School-Adult Education as well as a certified trainer for the WEST RAEN AEEP.

Amanda Vellake serves as Director of the Adult and Continuing Education Division of the Buffalo Public School District, one of the premier education and workforce skills training providers in the Western New York region. The Division offers TASC test preparation, English as a Second Language and Computer courses, and vocational training at 35 sites around the city. Amanda is a Past-Secretary of NYACCE.
ELAINE ROBERTS

Director of Programs, International Center-ESOL, Catholic Charities Community Services
Elaine Roberts is the Director of Programs for the International Center, the ESOL department of Catholic Charities Community Services (CCCS). As part of CCCS’ Division of Immigrant and Refugee Services, the International Center provides ESOL and Citizenship Preparation programming in Manhattan and the Bronx and in Westchester, Orange, and Dutchess Counties. The Center’s goal is to provide the language skills and confidence necessary for all English language learners to communicate effectively in their personal, professional, and academic lives in New York. Prior to joining Catholic Charities, Elaine worked with adult learners throughout NYC at several community-based organizations. She has been a steering committee of the New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy (NYCCAL) since 2011.

Divisional Administrator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education, Eastern Suffolk BOCES
Barbara Egloff has dedicated over 25 years to providing educational services to Eastern Suffolk BOCES secondary and adult students. She is currently the Divisional Administrator for the Career, Technical and Adult Education Department and oversees adult programming at six campuses and numerous satellite locations. Barbara has served on various boards, committees and task forces at the local, regional and state level. Currently she serves on Suffolk County’s Welfare to Work Commission, Workforce Development Board, Reentry Task Force, Regional Justice Task Force, Carol Pufahl Literacy Foundation and she participates on many advisory boards for Eastern Suffolk BOCES business, industry and community partners. Barbara enjoys working with students and her administrative team. She is often found working with colleagues and partners on community service projects. Barbara strives to create a learning community where teachers and staff work collaboratively to “transform lives” for all students.

Laurie Bargstedt is the Coordinator of Adult Literacy and Corrections Education at Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES. She manages four adult learning centers: Amsterdam Literacy Zone; Gloversville Literacy Zone; and the Fulton and Montgomery Academies inside the County Correctional Facilities. In a career spanning more than 25 years in adult education she has taught basic education, GED preparation, English as a Second Language and workforce readiness in classroom settings and through distance learning programs. She holds a BS in Adult & Community Education, Master’s in Education Administration and is a certified School Administrator and Supervisor. She is a Certified Manager in Program Improvement and a recipient of the Lawrence Levin Award.

John Hunt is the Assistant Dean for Pre-College Programs in the Division of Adult and Continuing Education at LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) in the borough of Queens in New York City, where he leads a $8M annual portfolio of non-credit programs in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), integrated workforce development, high school equivalency (HSE), remedial education, and educational and career pathways advisement.
With more than 25 years of experience in the adult education and grants development fields, he has launched and managed contextualized ESOL courses and services for civics and citizenship, parent engagement, and workforce development in the healthcare, retail, and hospitality sectors, including the USDOL Hotel T.E.A.C.H curriculum and the NYC Welcome Back Center for immigrant nurses. He has presented nationally on innovative models of integrated ESOL (“NY-BEST”) and career pathways development, immigrant parent engagement, and skilled immigrant career advisement.
He previously taught ESOL in Japan with the JET Program, and in Spain and New York with International House, having earned the RSA Cambridge DELTA teaching diploma, along with degrees from Vassar College, New York University’s Graduate School or Arts and Science, and Baruch’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs (CUNY). As a first-generation graduate from an immigrant family and a fluent Spanish speaker, he is committed to creating opportunities for new Americans to achieve their American Dreams.

Be Jensen is the Director of the New York City Support and Technical Assistance Center (NYC STAC) at the Literacy Assistance Center. Be joined the staff of the LAC in 2007 with 13 years of experience as an ESOL instructor and 10 years of experience as a program director of a community-based adult education program. Be provides training and coaching on standardized test administration and has been responsible for the design and implementation of LAC professional development on a wide range of leadership, instructional, and programmatic topics. Be is a Center of Applied Linguistics (CAL)-certified BEST Plus Trainer. a NYSED-trained trainer on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), and an NYU-certified Executive and Organizational Coach.
KATHY HOUGHTON
STAC Liaison - Upstate
Executive Director, Literacy New York
Kathy Houghton is the Executive Director of Literacy New York and the director of NY's Rest of State STAC (Support and Technical Assistance Center). In these positions, she creates, implements, and monitors systems and procedures to ensure delivery of grant and project deliverables, and supports staff in meeting outcomes. As STAC Director, she provides technical assistance to community-based adult literacy programs that are grantees of NYS Adult Literacy Education (ALE) funding. Prior to becoming LNY's Executive Director, Kathy was the Director of Program Services for LNY for 12 years.
